Screening Bamboos

Some of the best bamboo species for screening. If it has a common name that is listed first. These are listed according to maximum height.   All are cold hardy but those that are particularly cold tolerant are are labeled.  There are many bamboos that make great screens, in fact most do. These are just some of he ones that were very popular when I operated my bamboo nursery.  Often you can make a much more dense screen by pruning the bamboo.  This is particularly true of Arrow, Golden, and Yellow Groove Bamboo.

ruscus-bamboo Shibataea kumasacaRuscus Bamboo is a small, shrub like bamboo that makes has tiny canes with oval shaped leaves.  Gets about 6 to 7 feet tall.
Broadleaf bamboo Indocalamus latifoliusBroadleaf bamboo Grows to about 5 to 7 feet. Big leaves with foliage on the lower parts of the cane make this an ideal screen. It’s supposed to be very cold hardy, staying green down to -5F.
golden-bamboo Phyllostachys aurea Golden bamboo does take on a golden yellow tint when the grove is in full sun.  The swollen, distorted nodes at the base of the canes make a perfect handhold.  Often used for fishing poles.
palmata Sasa palmata Palmata bamboo has leaves arranged like the palm of a hand.  They are about 12 inches long and 2 inches wide.  It does well in partial shade
Yellow stripe on P. aureosulcata Phyllostachys aureosulcataYellow Groove is one of the more cold hardy bamboos and was always a popular choice for northern climates.  It makes a dense privacy screen and can be pruned to the heigth desired.
spectabilis-new-canes Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis’ Spectabilis bamboo lives up to it’s name with bright yellow canes that have green grooves alternating to each side of the internodes.
david-bisset-zoo Phyllostachys bissettiBisset David bamboo makes a tall screen with canes very close together.  This bamboo is very common at the Birmingham Zoo.
 arrowbamboo Psuedosasa japonica Arrow Bamboo, so called because of the slim canes with nodes that are not prominent.  The culms grow very straight and close together.
ruscus-bamboo Shibatea kumasaca – Ruscus Bamboo is a shrub like bamboo with tiny canes and beautiful, oval shaped leaves.  It can reach about 7 feet in heigth.
 big-red-margin Phyllostachys rubromarginata Red Margin Bamboo makes a tall screen that is both cold hardy and drought tolerant.  Probably the fastest spreading of the running bamboos.
